Dual-channel version for two independent Modbus RTU universes

  • Number of channels: Two independent Modbus RTU channels (each with full address range)
  • Number of Modbus devices: Up to 248 Modbus devices can be connected and addressed on one channel.
    Technical note: The two channels support 32 bus loads each. Please check the documentation of the Modbus devices to be connected for the bus load caused by this device in each case. Modern devices load the bus with a load between 1/4 and 1/8 units. If all connected devices load the bus with 1/8 units each (= 32 possible loads : 1/8 = 256) Load then the theoretical addressable maximum of 248 Modbus RTU devices can be used.
  • Cable length: Maximum 1200 metres
  • Communication: Interference-resistant communication through differential data transmission via two wires
  • Plug'n'Play: This extension is automatically recognised and integrated by the Timberwolf server, set-up and administration via graphical web APP

RS-485 communication parameters (adjustable in the Timberwolf server)

  • Baud rate: 1200 - 115200 (adjustable for each channel separately)
  • Data bits: 8 bit
  • Stop bits: 1 or 2 bit
  • Parity: even, odd, none

Microswitch (for GND & switchable termination per channel)

  • 120 Ohm: Terminating resistor
  • 390 Ohm: Pull-up resistor
  • 390 Ohm: Pulldown resistor
  • Ground: Switchable GND

Galvanic isolation

  • Power supply: The power supply (from USB) is galvanically isolated with an isolated DC/DC converter.
  • Modbus RTU communication: The two channels are galvanically isolated from USB (data channel).

Overvoltage protection

The extension contains a basic protection against overvoltages. For a complete overvoltage and overcurrent protection of the Modbus RTU channels, we recommend the RS-485 BlitzART surge arresters from our range, which have been certified up to 10,000 V and 5,000 amperes. This Modbus extension is available in an inexpensive set together with two such RS-485 BlitzART modules.

Modbus RTU decoding / coding (adjustable in Timberwolf Server)

  • Byte order: Big Endian & Little Endian (eight combinations for 16 bit / 32 bit / 64 bit)
  • Data types: Bool, Integer (1 - 64 bit), Signed Integer (2 - 64 bit, as one or two's complement), Floating point 32 / 64 bit, ASCII

Value handling (configurable in Timberwolf Server)

  • Configurable value check: value is equal to, within or outside value range, greater than or less than specified parameters
  • Configurablevalue adjustment: calculate fixed point, replace with fixed value, invert value, free formula for any calculation up to 64 bit integer / floating point
  • Conversion to Timberwolf object: All numeric values can be converted to Boolean, Integer, Floating Point or String
  • Units: Physical units can be predefined
  • Write direction: Most operations are also available for the write direction (towards the Modbus RTU device).
